Disease State: Stroke/TIA
Educational Objectives
- Provide health care providers with current data on the incidence of TIA in the US and the data demonstrating the significantly increased risk for stroke, death, and /or disability in patients who have experienced a TIA.
- Prioritize TIA as a medical emergency that requires immediate clinical evaluation and the relevance of its recognition in the primary care setting.
- Enable physicians to effectively identify and diagnose TIA using the latest prognostic and diagnostic tools and algorithms for TIA (such as the ABCD2 Score).
- Raise awareness amongst physicians that stroke begets stroke. Review the epidemiologic evidence demonstrating that the most immediate risk for a stroke survivor is a recurrent stroke.
- Enhance physicians’ and other healthcare providers’ knowledge and understanding of clinical guidelines and treatment strategies for reducing the risk of recurrent non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke.
- Enhance awareness of TIA/stroke survivors and their caregivers of the chronic nature of their condition and of the importance of self management strategies to reduce future morbidity and mortality and improve quality of life.
